The Oscar-nominated film is the No. 2 top-grossing documentary of 2018 behind the Mister Rogers movie.
One of my favorite movies that I watched last year was a documentary called Free Solo. The film follows the insane journey of Alex Honnold’s dream of climbing Yosemite’s famous El Capitan, a 3,200-foot vertical rock face… without any ropes or gear. It is seriously one of the most nerve-wracking films ever.

Alex Honnold pulled off one of the great physical human achievements in history and if you didn’t see it in theaters, you’ll be able to watch it for free on Nat Geo on March 3rd! Oh yeah, it’ll also air commercial free!
Free Solo directors Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin follow Alex Honnold as he begins training for the climb but sees the armor of invincibility he’s built up over decades unexpectedly break apart when he begins to fall in love, threatening his focus and giving way to injury and setbacks. The docu captures deeply human moments with Honnold as well as the death-defying climb that results in a triumph of the human spirit.
Vasarhelyi and Chin had this to say in a statement:
“When we were making this film, we could not have imagined the response we have received. While most of us wouldn’t dream of free-soloing 3,000 feet, Alex’s story of courage, dedication and determination is very relatable.”
This is an incredible film that you have to experience to truly appreciate the epicness of the feat that Honnold pulled off. Make sure to watch it on March 3rd!

For NatGeo’sFree Solo, co-directors and producers E. Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin, it was all about chronicling the first-ever free solo climb of El Capitan at Yosemite National Park and they did it in a way that was both breathtaking and suspenseful. But to get the cameras next to rock climber Alex Honnold without distracting him, as any false move would send him plummeting to his death, was an art unto itself.
The film was four years in the making. For some of the most incredible shots, the filmmakers could not use drones as they didn’t want anything to bother Honnold. Rather, they utilized helicopters and cameras stationed up and down the steep, almost completely vertical 3,000 foot-high wall of the mountain, plus a camera crew on the ground.
